Music of the 20th and 21st century

in a programme inspired by the celestial bodies

FULL MOON

While enjoying the warm summer nights, the vocal group PUTNI (Birds), together with their colleagues-instrumentalists, have created a new programme inspired by the celestial bodies, with music of the 20th and 21st century. The concert will take place on Tuesday, July 20, at 19.00 in the Riga Latvian Society White Hall as part of the summer concert cycle. Together with the vocal group PUTNI in the concert will participate Anda Eglīte (kokle), Ivars Ozols (contrabass) and Valters Līcis (percussion instruments).

In the centre of the concert programme Full Moon will be the meditative and beautiful performance of Marina Gribincika - Fifth Season (2012), written specially for Birds, kokle, contrabass and vibraphone. Its poetic foundation is a Japanese hake-style writing of Latvian and English poetry. The meditative nature of the piece is created by kalimba, glass glasses, water spray and wind chimes. The programme will also include the compositions of Sabīne Ķezbere, Kaija Anneli Saariaho, Charles Griffin, Ieva Alenčika, Agita Mačuka and other compositions, joined by the theme of the solar system’s celestial bodies, cosmic colourfulness and mystery that has fascinated many artists.

“Claude’s Debisie Clair de Lune, Antonin Dvořák’s Song for the Moon from the Opera Mermaid, the romantic Schuman’s song Mondnacht, Arnold Schoenberg's iconic work Pierrot Lunaire, Ludwig van Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, Frank Sinatra’s and The Beatles songs, Pink Floyd's album The Dark Side of the Moon … A lot of popular works have come from the “moon”, looking for symbols, romantically mystical images, singing about the moon's dimly spooky light, sleepless nights, its impact on people's sometimes impulsive and inexplicable behaviour, even madness.

The impact of the moon on the Earth and life on it is an undeniable fact - the moon affects the movement of all the waters, causing tides; it determines the distribution of days in months, and it is believed that the moon is also managing our mood. The full Moon is the Moon phase when the moon is fully illuminated when viewing from Earth. It happens at a time when the Sun, Earth, and Moon stand on a single straight line. In this phase, the visible side of the Moon is sunlit, and its energy breaks out with full force. We want to create these cosmic activities and the nocturnal mood for the concert audience,” says the programme concept author Antra Dreģe.

The summer concert cycle consists of very different performances in terms of themes and musicians’ composition, in which the professional vocal group Putni has combined with musical instrumentalists. According to the mood of the lightest time of the year, all three concert programmes are designed with a slightly playful beat, richly using the “seasonings” offered by contemporary, ancient, and electronic music.

In June, the first cycle’s concert Music on the summer evening took place.  The concert programme consisted of the composition of colourful instruments (electric guitar, medieval harpsichord, basset horn and hurdy-gurdy) and 8 singers’ voices, performing ancient and contemporary music by vocal group Putni, Ieva Saliete, Jēkabs Nīmanis, Dārta Pladiņa and Matīss Čudars.

On July 20, all the interesents are welcome to programme inspired by the celestial bodies - Full Moon, and the concert of the contrabass player Staņislavs Judins, trombonist Artūrs Bērziņš and vocal group Putni - PostCommunication. Dreams. Lullabies on September 10, in the Riga Latvian Society House White Hall, that will take listeners to the world of electroacoustic music through the sound landscape of voices, contrabass, trombone, and live electronics.
