The year’s 2013 Word is Latvianization of the word "selfie". The year’s Unword is "deal, deals, to deal". With this word are described marketing and business deals. The year’s Winged Saying is the phrase said by the State President Andris Bērziņš „The future is in the hands of the people of the future!”

First creative workshops for children „Open the world for opportunities and skills”

On January 18, this year the first creative workshops in the framework of the culturally educational activities cycle for children „Open the world for opportunities and skills” took place. The aim of the activity is to promote interest in children about culture, different professions, and crafts, develop and improve abilities of emotional and artistic expressing, develop social communication and emotional world of children.

Creative work competition "Me and my Motherland"

In the creative work competition participate children and youth (14 – 19 years old), children and youth with special needs or functional disorders, orphans, as well as Latvian children and youth, who live abroad. Children from Norway are especially welcome to participate to express their feelings, thoughts about Latvia, to create visual arts works from which the travelling exhibition will be made.

On December 27 was announced the annual inquiry regarding Latvian Language Year’s Word, Unword and Winged Saying that will continue until January 13, 2014. Received material will be evaluated by the jury that are the organisers of the inquiry – commissions of the RLS Latvian Language Advancement Group (LLAG), Latvian Writers Union (LWU) and Latvian Academy of Science Terminology Commission.

Children culturally educational activities’ cycle „Open World for Opportunities and Skills”

Riga Latvian Society (RLS), starting from January 18 this year, organises culturally educational activities’ cycle for children. During the activities the children will have opportunity to train attention and concentration skills, develop and improve emotional expressing opportunities, reduce tension and promote breaking of different barriers, learn conflict solution, develop social communication and will be promoted to participate in artistic amateur performances.

„Ramave – for a long time kept secret” – narration by Astrīde Ivaska

We invite everyone to visit the reading about organisation Ramave on 6 January, 2014 at 18.00 in the RLS House, Merķeļa Street 13 that will be given by its member in post-war period - Astrīde Ivaska. A. Ivaska has obtained degree of philology science candidate at Marburg University in Germany; has published poetry collections, translated from several languages, worked in magazine redactions, also as a librarian and teacher in the USA.
