Writer Jānis Klīdzējs - 100

On May 8, at 18.00 everybody is welcome to the event devoted to the writer Jānis Klīdzējs that will take place in the Riga Latvian Society House White Hall.

Remembering and celebrating the writer’s 100 years, during the event we invite to listen to the literature researcher’s Anna Egliena narration about the writer’s literary contribution. Together  with the film director Jānis Streičs, actors Akvelīna Līvmane,  Mārtiņš  Egliens, Bērtulis Pizičs, musician Ēriks Zeps and the Riga Latvian Society chamber choir “Austrums” we will look into Jānis Klīdzējs’ life, writings, documental videos and fragments from the film’s “Man’s Child” creation process. Singers and musicians have prepared musical performance on the basis of Jānis Klīdzējs’ work “Golden Cross”. The event will enrich Latgalian artists’ natural landscapes.

Jānis Klīdzējs (06.05.1914 - 02.05.2000) learned in Sakstagals basic school.  The desire for the light and culture tradition he got from Francis Trasūns. Riga gave him mind education opportunities: Conservatoire students’ evenings, St. Jacob’s cathedral on Sundays and everyday way to the university, lectures of psychology, philology, history, cosmography and theology. Riga art life with opera, theatres, concerts and exhibition.

In Riga writer’s works captured the attention of the biggest Riga’s newspapers, and his poems, stories and descriptions were published in the newspapers “Morning”, “The Newest News” and others. With the written word of Jānis Klīdzējs Latvia got to know Latgale, that lived its life little known to other regions. It was a rich time in Latvian literature: Andrejs Eglītis, Aleksandrs Grīns, Kārlis Skalbe, Jānis Andrups, Leonīds Breikšs and others. Jānis Klīdzējs was expected in writers’ evenings, and his work was evaluated with Latvian Culture Fund’s prizes.

The harsh time finished dreams of the Latvian Freedom Generation (writer’s designation), and together with other thousands of Latvians also Klīdzējs left Latvia in 1944. His contribution to literature is 24 books, where were disclosed Latvian life and events in the motherland.

Jānis Klīdzējs brought Latgale and its soul to Riga and in Latvian literature, strengthening the awareness: we are one nation. ”I am Latvian writer, who comes from Latgale”, said the writer. Jānis Streičs, who sonorously and with smart looked with Klīdzējs eyes to Latgale in his film “Man’s Child”, to what it looked like and what it would never look like again, helped to open to Latvians those gates through which could enter Jānis Klīdzējs with his 24 books’ burden – a man, who in his centennial has deserved our respectfulness and cordial remembrance.
