Oak Avenue – symbol of Independent state
„Stand hard, work bravely. For whom? For Latvia!” We - the Riga Latvian Society in cooperation with the State Border Guard officers will do it! We invite also you to participate in the charity campaign, during which we each will plant an oak tree to mark our Fatherland’s border with prominent tree avenue.
Latvia’s borders with Lithuania and Estonia in the framework of Schengen Agreement make countries’ inner borders; with neighbouring countries Russia and Belorussia – outer borders. Although nowadays biggest parts of borders are only symbolic, they still are basic element of independent country as a symbol. That is why RLS Ladies’ Commission and State Border Guard officers started the campaign two years ago, during which the oak avenue will be made, marking Latvia’s land border. The campaign is organised once a year, and the aim of the Riga Latvian Society in this campaign is to plant an Oak Avenue along all Latvia’s Border. Until now 40 oak trees have been planted.
An oak tree is a holy tree for Latvian nation, testimony of love to Fatherland. An oak tree branch is depicted in Latvia’s State Seal, also the Riga Latvian Society historic flag and logo is ornamented with this symbol of strength and long life. The planted trees will remind of our love to fatherland and basic values through years. Besides, the campaign will rouse the civil awareness and patriotism in its participants, as well as will promote cooperation between NGO and state institutions.
We invite everyone to participate in the campaign and give one’s investment in creating oak trees’ avenue along Latvia’s border – to provide oneself with an oak plant, by reserving them beforehand or ordering from seed plots or presenting plants from each own personal properties! The campaign will finish on April, 2014 with a ceremonial oak trees’ planting event. About further campaign’s process we will inform henceforth!
